DEALING WITH BACK TO SCHOOL ANXIETY FOR TEACHERS

All throughout the summer, I tend to get nightmares about school. I see myself sleeping in, I see kids going crazy, I see myself totally screwing up.... And it makes me anxious. All. Summer. I have realized that this is summer anxiety, and that there are a few things that I can do about it. A few truths about summer anxiety: It is a real thing, and it is normal. It happens because there are so many unknowns about next school year- and you can't do too much to help that right now! -Having summer anxiety does not make you a bad teacher. A few thing you can do to deal with it: -Accept that there is not much you can do now. As much as it stinks, you cannot control your classroom now. There's a lot of stuff that you just don't know yet, and you have to be ok with that. Remind yourself that you can deal with it when school starts. Think about the positives. I tend to dwell on all of the terrible things that happened in the past- and this makes my anxiety even worse! Instead, think about your favorite parts of being a teacher-- because you will have those again! Start planning. Buying one or two things for your classroom or scrolling through Pinterest for a few fun lessons that you can do this year will help you feel so much more prepared- and therefore more at peace.
