South Korea and Hungary have agreed to elevate their relations to a strategic partnership. President Moon Jae-in on a state visit to Budapest held a summit with Hungarian President Janos Ader on Wednesday following which he said the two countries agreed to step up cooperation in promising industries to prepare for the fourth industrial revolution. "We have agreed to further strengthen our bilateral economic cooperation. We also highly evaluate trade that reached a record-high last year despite the pandemic. We will make efforts together to expand bilateral trade in promising future industries, such as electric vehicle batteries. Bilateral trade between the two countries reached an all-time high of 3-point-6 billion U.S. dollars last year. South Korea is also the number one foreign investor in Hungary which is home to the production factories of local companies, including Samsung SDI and SK Innovation. "We continue to be partners in economic cooperation and I am confident that we can have fruitful cooperation in the fields of science, technology and the economy. I wish to maintain the good relations we've built up already." During the summit,... the leaders also agreed to work toward the common goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050... as well as expand cooperation in the areas of science technology, digitalization and healthcare. Hungary also reaffirmed support for South Korea's efforts for peace on the Korean Peninsula. Seoul and Budapest established diplomatic ties in 1989. Moon's visit to Budapest was the first by a South Korean leader in 20 years. Moon said he hopes the summit becomes a new turning point to expand bilateral cooperation and achieve co-prosperity.
