Nashville, Tenn --- President Obama defended his recent executive action on immigration at an event in South Nashville Tuesday. The President called on Congress to pass an immigration reform bill and said his decision to give some 5 million undocumented immigrants a temporary reprieve from deportation was the right thing to do in the meantime. "If you have deep ties to this country and you are willing to get right by the law and do what you need to do then you shouldn't have to worry about being deported," said the President. President Obama spoke before a crowd of roughly 75 people including Jazmin Ramirez. Ramirez's parents are undocumented immigrants who may benefit from the recent executive action. "As soon as he came in there my stomach was tingling and it was like oh this is so surreal," said Ramirez. Across the street a crowd of perhaps hundreds demonstrated. That crowd included supporters of the President and opponents like Sue Buck. "He has usurped the Constitution. He has signed illegally for amnesty for people who have come here illegally," said Buck. Santiago Meneses was among the President's supporters in the crowd. Menesses marched with a group of men carrying a giant sign asking the public to let the President reform immigration. "We are here to reform the immigration system which is broken. He is trying to do the right thing but many people don't allow him to fix it," said Meneses. _______________ Stay up to date with our social media: WZTV on Facebook: / foxnashville WZTV on Twitter: / foxnashville Subscribe to WZTV on YouTube: / @fox17nashville Daily News Playlist: • Playlist For more information, visit https://fox17.com/ Have a news tip?
