Less than a month before the Yom Kippur War, a major clash between Israeli and Syrian aircraft occurred over the Mediterranean Sea. Israeli RF-4E attempted to enter Syrian airspace south of Latakia but were detected by a ground radar and intercepted by a group of Syrian MiG-21s lead by captain el-Gar. Escorting Israeli Mirage III's intervened and a large dogfight evolved with both sides claiming many kills.
