Tokyo protests against Trump's immigration ban

(31 Jan 2017) Around 30 demonstrators rallied near the United States embassy in Tokyo on Tuesday to show solidarity with protesters across the US demanding an end to President Donald Trump's immigration ban. Trump's executive order that halted the Syrian refugee programme and temporarily suspended immigration from seven Muslim-majority countries has sparked nationwide protests in the US and abroad. Born in Brazil and raised in South Florida, 24-year-old Helena Lopes says she feels frustrated not being able to join the movement in her hometown, but that she hopes to show support from Japan. Lawyer Jesse Glickstein, who comes from a family of immigrants and whose grandparents were survivors of the holocaust, called for a reversal of the immigration ban. The group, comprised mainly of US citizens living in Japan, held banners and signs, some reading, "No ban, no wall," and "Immigrants make America Great."
