Prince Philip was honored by a 41-round gun salute from the British military at land and sea. The sombre volley for the former Royal Navy commander was fired at a rate of one per minute from military bases in the UK and Gibraltar as well as warships at sea. Similar salutes – the most according to military protocol – were also held in Canberra and Wellington, as the Queen is head of state in Australia and New Zealand.
