Bae Eun-ji reports. Amid concerns over North Korea's increasing missile and nuclear capabilities, top diplomats of South Korea and the U.S. met in Washington and vowed to continue close cooperation to achieve peace on the Korean peninsula. After meeting the U.S. top diplomat at the State Department on Friday local time, Park said during a joint news conference that Seoul and Washington will continue their "water-tight coordination" to achieve genuine peace on the Korean peninsula. “We are committed to strengthening extended deterrence while maintaining a robust combined defense posture. Any provocations by North Korea will be met with a firm and united response.” U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken also reaffirmed that Washington is committed to defending South Korea, using the full range of its military capabilities --including nuclear, conventional, and missile defense capabilities. Noting that this year marks the 70th anniversary of the alliance between the two countries, he said the U.S. remains committed to the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. As for the Biden Administration's Inflation Reduction Act, which sparked concerns in South Korea, Seoul's Foreign Minister said they will work together to ensure that it's implemented in ways that address Korean companies' concerns and benefit both countries' businesses and industries. Ahead of the joint conference, the two officials signed a protocol to amend and extend the joint Science and Technology Agreement --which was first signed in 1992. Through this, the two countries extended the agreement for an additional 10 years, and expanded the scope of their cooperation, including in emerging fields like biotechnology, quantum, and artificial intelligence.
