Is an electric trike going to feel too big… too heavy… or too hard to handle? That’s one of the most common—and completely valid—questions we hear from riders, especially seniors and first-time e-trike buyers. Stick around, because today we’re breaking it down honestly. Hey everyone, I’m Dustin. I have over 20 years of experience in the bike and e-bike industry, and today we’re answering the question: Will an electric trike be too big or too heavy for me? Why Weight Is a Big Deal on Regular E-Bikes Let’s start with a truth most people already feel instinctively. On a two-wheel e-bike, weight absolutely matters. When a bike weighs 60, 70, or even 80+ pounds, you’re responsible for balancing all of it—especially when stopping, starting, or if the bike tips unexpectedly. For many riders, particularly seniors, that’s where fear comes in. And honestly? That concern is valid. Why Weight Works For You on an Electric Trike Here’s the key difference most people don’t realize: On an electric trike, weight actually increases stability. With three wheels planted firmly on the ground, you’re no longer balancing the bike. You’re simply steering it. That means: No tipping at stops No holding the bike upright No panic when starting or slowing down The weight stays low and grounded, helping the tires grip the road instead of working against you. In real-world riding, the size and weight of an e-trike do not make it harder to steer or control. What About Hills? Another big fear: “If it’s heavier, won’t it struggle on hills?” Yes, heavier trikes technically require more power—but that’s exactly why e-trikes are built with strong motors and pedal assist. With electric assistance, you’re never required to muscle the trike uphill on your own. You can: Start moving with throttle Increase pedal assist as needed Ride without straining your body The motor does the work so you don’t have to. “Will It Feel Clunky or Hard to Turn?” This surprises a lot of first-time riders. Even trikes around 110 pounds—like the Simple Glide—are often described as easy, smooth, and confidence-inspiring to maneuver. Why? Shorter frame geometry Smaller front wheel for lighter steering Low center of gravity Electric assist at all times You’re not wrestling the weight—the trike moves itself. The Real Challenge: Transportation Now let’s be honest about the one place weight does matter: transporting the trike. E-trikes are heavier than standard bikes. Depending on the model and setup, ours range from about 70 pounds to 150 pounds. That said, most riders don’t lift them straight up. Instead, they use: Ramps Trike-compatible racks Step-by-step loading (front wheel first, then rear) With the right setup, transporting an e-trike is manageable—even without lifting the full weight at once. Bottom Line If you’re worried an electric trike will be: Too heavy to ride ❌ Too big to steer ❌ Too hard to control ❌ The answer, based on thousands of real riders, is no. The stability of three wheels and electric assistance removes the very problems that make weight an issue on two-wheel bikes. Want to Learn More or Test Ride?
