U.S. working with allies to pressure North Korea

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence says Washington is working to apply more pressure on North Korea, in conjunction with its allies and China. But when asked about the possibility of direct negotiations with Pyongyang, Pence was skeptical talks could happen any time soon. Yu Joonhee reports. Aboard the USS Ronald Reagan at the Yokosuka Naval Base in Japan, Mike Pence reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to defend its East Asian allies from North Korea. He called the regime "the most dangerous and urgent threat to peace and security" in the region. Currently on the second leg of his 10-day trip in Asia, Pence said the Trump administration would actively work with South Korea, Japan and China to apply more economic and diplomatic pressure on Pyongyang. Pence also took a much tougher line on North Korea, saying the days of broken promises were over, while adding that the U.S. would counter any attack with an "overwhelming response". He also ruled out the possibility of direct talks between Washington and Pyongyang at the current time, prioritizing discussions with American allies to co-ordinate their response against the North. The Trump administration's hardening stance against the regime was also echoed by U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Wednesday. Tillerson told reporters that Washington was reviewing the possibility of reinstating North Korea as a state sponsor of terrorism. In addition, he also said the U.S. considering "all options" to bring pressure to bear on North Korea over its nuclear program. Both Washington and Pyongyang have warned each other of devastating consequences if one made a provocative move, amid growing speculation North Korea is on the verge of conducting its sixth nuclear test.
