CCNA 200 - 301 - Lesson - 33: Spine & Leaf Network Architecture

Section - 5: Understanding Network Topology Architectures Lesson - 33: Spine & Leaf Network Architecture We are back again with our CCNA Course series and in this video, we will be discussing what Spine and leaf Network Architecture is. Originally, the Spine & Leaf network design was developed for data centers as a means of enhancing performance when dealing with predominantly east-west traffic. A leaf switch in the network is directly connected to every spine switch, which reduces the number of "hops" between any two devices in the network to just one. In a Spine & Leaf topology, two switching layers-a spine and leaf-are used in the data center network. There are access switches in the leaf layer that aggregate traffic from servers and connect it directly to the core or spine of the network. A full-mesh topology is formed by connecting all leaf switches with spine switches. Two-layer data center topologies such as this are useful for data centers that experience much more east-west traffic than north-south traffic. Some advantages of the leaf-spine architecture are given below: Improved performance Improved redundancy Supports less expensive, fixed-configuration switches Improved scalability Improved security Adoptable to the enterprise So, this was all about spine and leaf architecture; stay tuned to gain an in-depth understanding of concepts covered in CCNA certification offered by Cisco Systems.
