Calls for tighter lockdown after major study finds COVID-19 cases surge

Scientists have warned Britain may need tougher lockdown measures after a survey found virus cases increased in January after Boris Johnson’s national lockdown was put in place. The so-called REACT study tested 142,900 volunteers between 6th-15th January for coronavirus and found infections had risen by 50% since the same period in December. Around one in 63 people are thought to have COVID-19 in England, and in virus hotspots such as London, this number rises to one in 36.
