Oriental Sketch (17:57) Sergei Rachmaninoff, pianist Recorded 1929-41 in Camden, N.J. When Sergei Rachmaninoff migrated to the United States in search of fortune he a had a problem; he had to eat. He decided that his best chance of making a living was to try a career as a concert pianist, and set to practicing full time and learn a repertoire. The rest, as they say, is musical history. Rachmaninoff proved to be one of the greatest pianists of all time, and his skills as a composer nurtured and grew as well. By the time he had reached the late years of his career there was little that he had not achieved as a great musician. Nearly eighty years after his passing, his recordings as a pianist-composer are prized as among the most popular classical recordings in history. Here is another collection of him playing his own music at the keyboard, newly restored in 2022 from original matrix-based sources.
