Most people with even a passing interest in investing have heard of Vanguard, the company synonymous with index funds. Fewer people have heard of Dimensional Fund Advisors. Vanguard is well-known for its low-cost funds that track market indexes, an approach to investing supported by theory and evidence. Dimensional similarly applies theory and evidence to portfolio design, but, unlike an index fund, they aim to beat the market.
