New Yorkers are spending this weekend under a ‘disaster emergency’ declared by Governor Kathy Hochul amid concern over the spread of polio. Analysis of wastewater by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found samples of the virus in several counties across the state, and although only one case has so far been confirmed earlier this year, it was the first the country has seen nearly a decade.
