About AK-47 AK-47 is one of the most trusted and widely used weapon in the world. The Indian Armed Forces are no exception to this. AK’s have been in service for decades which means soldiers are well versed with its functionality. The advantage with this is that training costs and time are minimal. Additionally, ammunition for the AK-47 (7.62 x 39mm) is not difficult to procure. However, considering the changing battle field scenario and use of advance weapons by terrorists, it’s must that Indian Army also upgrade its assault rifles with latest accessories to increase the lethality and accuracy. About SSS Defence After a very long time and probably first of its kind, there is some good news coming up for the indigenous small arms segment of defence. SSS Defence is the name many of you would be familiar with. It is a Bengaluru based small arms company founded in 2017. It became the first private Indian firm to have developed sniper rifles when it’s Viper and Saber rifles were released. The company has also developed a family of rifles comprising an assault rifle based on the 7.62×39mm cartridge, a carbine, and a designated marksman rifle. It is also developing a light machine gun. Update Last year, SSS Defence has defeated Israeli firm Fab Defense to brag the contract to upgrade a limited number of Kalashnikov rifles for a unit of the Indian Special Forces. SSS emerged as the lowest bidder for the tender for upgrading 24 AK-47 rifles in service. Fab Defense had monopoly over the Indian market for the upgrade of AK-47s in service with the Indian Army. They have upgraded few thousands of AK-47s being operated with the different units of Army over the last decade. This is the first time when an Indian company, with its own indigenous design and product, will upgrade a rifle for the Indian Army. As per latest reports, the first consignments of Made In India upgrade kits for the Indian Army's AKM/AK-47 rifles have been delivered to Para Special Forces units as you can see the images in front of you. Upgrade Talking about the AK-47 upgrade, The SSS Defence SOPMOD (Special Operations Peculiar Modification) has a tactical folding buttstock which in turn means a much smaller footprint of a weapon and it makes it easy to carry. The specially designed flash suppressor means a stealthier weapon altogether as it reduces the intensity of the visible flash during the gun shot. The upgrade is more user friendly and ergonomic by adding a tactical buttstock, cheek rest and butt pad so that the user has the advantage of customizing the machine as per personal preferences. The ingeniously simple and rugged design of the dust cover provides a rock-solid mount for picatinny rail based optical sighting systems and the quick release hinge also allows the use of longer scopes without the need for quick detach mounts. The Fore-end features quad rails made of Mil-Spec Aluminum Alloys can mount accessories such as Night sights, UBGL, Torches, Laser aiming devices etc. For additional functionality the handguard is also M-LOK compatible. The upgrade kit is completely is made of Mil-spec components which can be field fitted with minimal tools & specialized effort. SSS Defence has also offered to upgrade the rifle with a flash hider at no extra cost, since it was not part of the requirements issued by the particular unit of the Army.
