The leaders of 26 NATO member countries are attending the high-level meeting in the Turkish city, along with the leaders of 20 other partner countries. U.S. President George W. Bush, British Prime Minister Tony Blair, French President Jacques Chirac and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder are among the world leaders attending. In their first summit since the Alliance was wracked by bitter divisions over the Iraq war, the 26 have agreed to a request from Iraqi interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi for aid in training Iraq's armed forces. NATO leaders have also approved the expansion of peacekeeping mission in Afghanistan, with troop levels set to rise to 10-thousand during the country's elections, according to officials. The Alliance members have agreed to end the NATO-led peacekeeping mission in Bosnia by the end of the year. The European Union is expected to takeover the operation. Meanwhile, on the streets of Istanbul, hundreds of protesters hurled fire-bombs and stones at police as they tried to reach the conference centre where the NATO leaders were meeting. Turkey dramatically boosted security before Bush's arrival and in preparation for the NATO summit. However, Bush's arrival was preceded by a series of bomb blasts, including one on Thursday that injured three people outside the Ankara hotel where Bush was scheduled to stay. Another blast the same day on an Istanbul bus killed four people and injured 14.
