Understanding Mechanics of Materials-Shear-Introduction-Shear Force and Flow, Shear Stress

Chapter 5-Shear, Session 37-Introduction, Shear Force and Shear Flow, Shear Stress in Beams For other videos-   • Understanding Mechanics of Materials   Unlike the process of arriving at the Torsion and Flexure formula , Shear stress is obtained from the variation of bending moment. To start with we consider planks connected by dowels forming a beam, subjected to varying moment. We determine the shear force acting on a dowel at a given height. Next we consider the same bending moment case, but this time the beam is considered to be solid. Instead of a force in the dowel now there is shear flow and the shear stress parallel to the axis of the beam. We next discuss shear stress perpendicular to the axis of the beam which creates the internal shear force acting.
