En Route to COP26 Session 7 - Catalysing immediate action in sustainable urban mobility

The pandemic has highlighted how urban mobility can be transformed in just a few months. This session will focus on how national and local planning can deliver on a number of goals simultaneously - from global climate goals to national emission targets and local urban mobility resilience, with benefits for all. It will also highlight key opportunities for enhanced and coordinated near-term action that have arisen from COVID-19 responses. #EnRoutetoCOP26 7 Adequate national planning and support accompanied by a sense of urgency and robust implementation plans at the local level are necessary to catalyse change in urban mobility in the short and medium term. NUMPs, SUMPs, and other tools and resources will be shared to help support immediate action. The session will also feature an interactive segment where participants identify some of the most pressing challenges and promising actions that can be taken to drive sustainable, low carbon urban mobility. Co-created by leading thinkers and doers, during 1--3 December 2020 it featured a line up of around 150 world-class decision-makers and experts from national and local government, civil society, private sector, academia, philanthropy and multilateral entities. Scheduled to mark 12 months before the postponed United Nations Climate Conference under UK Presidency, En Route to COP26 was designed to accelerate collective and timely action by engaging transport actors to quickly, efficiently, and fairly realise the low carbon transport transition. The event featured opening and closing sessions, as well as 9 thematic sessions covering topics central to the acceleration of transport decarbonisation such as: national climate and transport strategies, placing transport decarbonisation at the heart of green and equitable economic recovery; re-thinking urban mobility and harnessing opportunities to fast track its delivery; ending internal combustion engines for passenger and freight transport; enabling sustainable maritime transport for Small Island Developing States and maximising the links between transport and health.
