Sub-compact cars have experienced their worst sales year in decades, with US buyers favoring larger sedans and crossovers. This situation doesn't bode well for Toyota's sub-compact hatchback, the Yaris. The Yaris was given a minor update for 2018 with a new front fascia and some interior changes, but it still feels like a car that is years out of date. The 1.5-liter engine produces just 106 horsepower going out to a four-speed automatic or five-speed manual. We sampled the five-speed manual in the sporty SE trim, which in theory should have provided a bit of fun. However, after spending a week with the Yaris, it was hard to come up with reasons to recommend one.
