5,000 dead in Mariupol, Mayor reported | Ukraine News | NewsRme

There were more than 5,000 civilian deaths in Mariupol on Wednesday, according to the city's mayor, as Ukraine gathered proof of Russian crimes on the outskirts of Kyiv and prepared for what may be a final struggle for eastern Ukraine. While there are indications that Moscow's soldiers executed people without regard to their nationality before fleeing, Ukrainian officials have continued to collect the bodies of the dead in the country's devastated cities outside of Kiev. New sanctions were imposed on Russia by the United States and its Western allies because of what they called war crimes committed by the Kremlin. An unnamed US military source stated Russia has completed the withdrawal of its projected 24,000 soldiers from the northern Ukrainian cities of Kyiv and Chernihiv. Moscow has gathered forces and is attempting to push farther into Ukraine's east, where the Kremlin has claimed its objective is to "free" the Donbas. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has issued a warning to this effect. An unnamed Western source said Russia's battle-damaged soldiers may need up to a month to reorganize for a big push into eastern Ukraine. Over 5,000 citizens were murdered during Russian bombing and street fighting in Mariupol, according to Mayor Vadym Boichenko of Mariupol. At least 50 people were killed when Russian soldiers blasted a hospital and set it on fire.
