PM Modi's GST Overhaul How 'Next-Gen' Reforms Will Make Goods Cheaper for the Common Man

On the occasion of the 79th Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a landmark announcement: "next-generation GST reforms" will be implemented by Diwali, with the aim of making everyday items more affordable. This decision is set to have a direct impact on your wallet. Currently, India's GST system operates with four tax slabs: 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%. However, the new reforms will likely consolidate this into a simplified two-slab structure, most likely at 5% and 18%. The biggest benefit of this change is that nearly 99% of products currently in the 12% slab will be moved to the lower 5% bracket, while 90% of goods in the 28% slab will be shifted to 18%. This means a wide range of products, from condensed milk and dry fruits to pasta and some medicines, could become cheaper. Similarly, big-ticket items like air conditioners, refrigerators, and televisions are expected to see a price reduction as they move from the 28% to the 18% tax category. The reform is not just about lowering prices; it's also designed to simplify the GST's complexity and improve the ease of doing business. The new system will reduce disputes over product classification. While a new 40% 'demerit' tax will be levied on a few luxury and "sin" goods like tobacco to balance revenue, the overall tax burden on most goods will decrease. The government believes this step will boost consumer spending, stimulate the economy, and create a more transparent and stable tax environment. The proposal is currently with a Group of Ministers and the GST Council for deliberation, and its implementation is eagerly awaited.
