Even despite their declining numbers, baby boomers still hold over half of the wealth in America with a similar breakdown across the developed world. But despite this wealth, the majority of this group are not financially self-sufficient and now their numbers are putting significant strain on retirement systems that were never really designed to deal dependency ratios this lopsided. Understanding the disconnect between a generational change we knew was coming and the systems that we developed to deal with it is also essential for understanding one other piece of disappointing news. Trillions of dollars in wealth are about to be handed down to younger generations that have historically been behind their parents on life's major financial milestones. As grim as it may be, for many people an inheritance is largely seen as their greatest opportunity to catch up and potentially afford a comfortable retirement of their own, but unfortunately for the vast majority of people, this great wealth transfer is probably only going to make things worse…
