Matthew 23, 7 woes on the Pharisees by Christ. Series on Gospel of Matthew . Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples, saying: Mat 23:2 The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses seat. Mat 23:3 Therefore all things whatever they tell you, do and observe; but do not you copy their works, for they say and do not. Mat 23:4 Yes, they bind heavy burdens and lay them on men's shoulders; but they will not move them with their finger. Mat 23:5 But they do all their works to be seen by men. For they make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long, Mat 23:6 and they love the chief place at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues, Mat 23:7 and the salutations in the marketplaces, and to be called of men, Rabbi. Mat 23:8 But you are not to be called Rabbi- for one is your teacher, and all you are brothers. Mat 23:9 And call no one on the earth your father- for one is your Father, He who is in heaven. Mat 23:10 Neither be called masters - for one is your master, the Christ. Mat 23:11 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant. Mat 23:12 And whoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled, and whoever shall humble himself shall be exalted. Mat 23:13 But woe to you, Scribes and Pharisees. Hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven in people's faces. For you neither enter yourselves nor allow those who would enter to go in. Mat 23:14 Woe to you Scribes and Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you devour widows' houses, while for a pretence you make long prayers. Therefore you shall receive greater condemnation. Mat 23:15 Woe to you, Scribes and Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he has become so, you make him twofold more a son of Gehenna than yourselves. Mat 23:16 Woe to you, you blind guides, who say: Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath. Mat 23:17 You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold, or the temple that has made the gold sacred? Mat 23:18 And, Whoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing! But whoever shall swear by the gift that is upon it, he is bound by his oath. Mat 23:19 You blind men! For which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred? Mat 23:20 He therefore that swears by the altar, swears by it and by all things on it.
