This 4K HDR video takes you to three of the continent’s most iconic wildlife regions: Kruger, Maasai Mara, and Mana Pools, where wild hippos roam and thrive in their natural habitat. There’s no music or narration—just pure ambient sound from the wild, including birds, insects, and the deep, resonant calls of hippos. Whether you’re watching to relax, learn, or simply escape for a while, this is wildlife, unfiltered. Chapters 00:00:00 Mana Pools National Park, Zimbabwe 00:00:33 Kruger National Park, South Africa 00:21:06 Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya 00:31:25 One of the most fascinating—and often underestimated—facts about hippos is just how dangerous they are. According to data from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and various wildlife studies, hippos are responsible for an estimated 500 human deaths per year in Africa, making them one of the deadliest large land mammals on the continent. Despite weighing up to 3,300 lbs, they can run at speeds of 18.6 mph over short distances. Hippos spend up to 16 hours a day in water to regulate body temperature and protect their sensitive skin, and they emerge at night to graze—sometimes traveling over 10 miles in a single night. Their bite force has been measured at around 1,800 psi, strong enough to crush bone and even small boats. This project was filmed by wildlife filmmaker Robert Hofmeyr over a span of four years, from 2018 to 2022. Using high-end cinema gear—including the RED V-Raptor, RED Epic Dragon, and other professional-grade cameras—he captured the behavior and environment of wild hippos with exceptional clarity and detail. Every shot was recorded with the goal of staying true to the natural atmosphere, preserving the real light, sound, and movement of each location.
