북한, 느슨한 분위기 질타하며 코로나방역 총력…"전민 나서야" North Korea has called for public support for its efforts to fight COVID-19, though the regime hasn't reported a single case of it. It's stressing 'absolute' obedience to the rules. But it's believed that in fact the coronavirus situation in the North is so serious... that the regime is putting it ahead of even its economic problems. Kim Ji-yeon reports. North Korea has once again called for the 'absolute' obedience of its people to the regulations and orders of leader Kim Jong-un... who during a politburo meeting last Thursday warned against the premature easing of measures to contain COVID-19. On Sunday, the North's main newspaper, the Rodong Sinmun, urged 'maximum alert,' citing the uncertainties stemming from the virus's spread. It also warned against carelessness and complacency as the country's quarantine measures have been in place longer than expected. These, it says, include its strengthened monitoring of the North's border with China... considered vital to weathering its economic difficulties. The North has still not reported a single case of the coronavirus, but it closed its trade routes and cut off exchanges with China... at the end of January as part of emergency measures to keep the virus out. South Korean experts have said those moves indicate that the coronavirus situation is in fact so serious in North Korea... that it's deemed more important to governing the country than its economic difficulties. The Rodong Sinmun has, in the pandemic, been putting great emphasis on the North's 'self-reliance' amid the economic sanctions placed on it,... as seen in its calling for immense public support for the construction of the Pyeongyang General Hospital, a project unveiled in mid-March.
