Are you familiar with the phrase: "Men aren't what they used to be"? Who is a real man today: the traditional breadwinner, the knight, the fully involved father, or the single man? In today's world, the demands on the male role are more contradictory than ever. Over the past 120 years, men have rapidly lost their absolute power. While in 1900, a man had complete legal and domestic control over a woman's life (from issuing a passport to determining the fate of children in divorce), he also bore absolute responsibility for her. Throughout the 20th century, a natural process of equalization of rights has been underway. And today, a woman can be anything from a housewife to a president. So what's left for a man? In this video, we'll take a detailed look at the phenomenon of the modern masculinity crisis. I'll discuss why modern men find themselves caught in a tight split between traditional expectations (to acquire resources and be strong) and new social roles (to be an empathic partner and an involved father). You'll learn why women today have it even easier in terms of self-realization, and how political advertising in Europe vividly exposes these double standards. And, as always, at the end of the lecture, I'll offer clear, practical (and quite unconventional!) advice: how a man can find his identity today, find a healthy balance between career and family, and why we all just need to... wait a little. Enjoy watching! I'd be grateful for your likes—otherwise, as a member of the third estate, I'll have to send you to confession 😉 ⏱ Timestamps (Episodes) 00:00 Introduction: Who is a real man today? 00:54 Women's rights and status in 1900 02:24 Inheritance and why women were "less valuable witnesses" 04:12 The State Council's concerns in 1913: What are the dangers of female lawyers? 05:02 Criminal and Family Law 120 Years Ago: Punishments and Divorces 07:08 Articles 106 and 107: Absolute Authority and Responsibility of the Husband 08:28 How Men Felt in 1900 09:25 A Funny Story: A "Confession" to a Psychologist During Lent 11:04 The 20th Century: An Era of Large-Scale Equalization of Rights 13:24 Power Gone, but Responsibility Remains: New Societal Demands 14:48 Why Is It Easier for Modern Women to Choose Their Own Path? 15:41 A Man on the Splits: Balancing Success and Involved Fatherhood 17:53 Danish Political Advertising as a Cross-Section of Double Standards 20:47 A Psychologist's Practical Recommendation 21:04 Why You Should Just "Wait" and Who Shapes Public Opinion 23:51 Generation Z: When Will Society Finally Accept New Gender Roles?
