Our quest to follow the Little Missouri River upstream as it began to rise from spring thawing and runoff, as well as ice jams, brought us down a deserted old state highway in the southwestern corner of North Dakota. We hadn't anticipated several factors about this highway. It was no longer a highway, but a dirt road. It had several steep grades (even 10 % !). It had switchbacks in one area, a first in our travels of North Dakota! Wisely we had chosen a heavy duty four wheel drive pickup for this fun road trip!
