The incidence of an ectopic pregnancy is one to two percent that is one to two women out of 100 can have an ectopic pregnancy. These pregnancies are not normal pregnancies. Now how does an ectopic pregnancy happen? In a normal pregnancy the sperm and the egg meet in the fallopian tube. After the fertilization the fertilized egg starts moving, comes into the uterus and gets implanted in the uterus and starts growing in the uterus. This is how the normal pregnancy is formed but in case of an ectopic pregnancy for some reasons the fertilized egg starts growing outside the uterus and causes an ectopic pregnancy. Now where all the ectopic pregnancies can happen? It can happen in the fallopian tube, it can happen in the ovaries, cervix in the previous cesarean scar and also in the abdominal cavity. Now coming to how common the ectopic pregnancy where it has happened? It is commonly known to happen in the fallopian tube. 90 % of the ectopic pregnancies happen in the fallopian tube. As these are not a normal pregnancies, if the pregnancy grows for example in the fallopian tube the tube will rupture which can cause severe pain abdomen and also a severe internal bleed in the abdominal cavity which can be a life-threatening situation to the mother.
