People surveying damage to house STORYLINE At least 14 people were killed early on Thursday in a US attack on a western Baghdad neighbourhood, police and residents said. The US command in Baghdad said it was aware of the report but had no immediate comment. The early-morning attack took place in the Washash area, next to the Mansour district of Baghdad, where an AP Television crew filmed area residents surveying the damage to their homes on Thursday morning. A black-cloaked woman wailed against Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's government as she picked through rubble next to her house. "Curses on this government, curses on Nouri al-Maliki." she screamed. Residents reported hearing explosions at around 3 am ( 2300GMT) that continued for about 45 minutes to an hour. ''US helicopters bombed our houses while we were sleeping," one woman told AP Television. "My son and my husband were killed and they (US forces) destroyed our house as you can see.'' A police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity for security reasons, said US helicopters had attacked the area, killing 14 civilians and injuring 10 others. On the scene, however, residents said they thought it had been a mortar attack and said 27 people had been killed. Some said US airplanes were involved.
