Francisco Franco was appointed Head of State and Generalissimo after the coup d'état of July 18, 1936, while Spain was embroiled in the Civil War. Franco was not among the candidates for this position; moreover, he was not a member of the initial National Defense Junta. However, the death of General Sanjurjo in a plane crash and a series of other circumstances allowed him to be appointed Head of State. His main rival for power after the Civil War was General Mola, but he too died in another plane crash. With no significant internal opposition, Franco ruled Spain from 1939 to 1975, establishing one of the longest-running dictatorships in Europe. 🔻SUGGESTION🔻 You might be interested in these videos related to this chronicle. ▶Who FINANCED the Spanish CIVIL WAR 1936-1939? • ¿Quién FINANCIÓ la GUERRA CIVIL española 1... ▶The Asturian Revolution of 1934: The Prologue to the Civil War. • Revolución de ASTURIAS 1934.
