2016 appears to be turning into a 'Clouded Yellow Year' judging from the number of these handsome butterflies (Colias croceus) that have been seen flying rapidly over the slopes of the North Downs in Surrey. The conditions for immigration to the UK have been favourable with warm winds blowing these insects across from the Continent so that they can breed. This one was photographed and filmed in the late afternoon as these insects are frenetically active during sunny weather and therefore unlikely to stay still for more than a few moments. One advantage of filming them late in the day is that they look particularly colourful in the warm afternoon light and the trick is to watch closely until they settle and then approach them from a low angle without casting a shadow.
