Star Wars (Main Title Theme) by John Williams (b. 1932), arr. Russell McKinney (b. 1963), is from the original trilogy's first movie (A New Hope) in 1977. It stands as the most widely known and popular of modern film music. Williams has scored more than a hundred movies and has created some of the most iconic film music of all time. Of interest, he played trombone in his youth and later studied piano, trumpet, and clarinet. He was born and raised in New York City , where his father was a professional orchestral percussionist, and moved to Los Angeles in 1948. After serving three years in the United States Air Force (1951-1954) he studied piano at Juilliard, moved back to California, and worked as a studio pianist in Hollywood. In 1972 his film composing career took off. From 1980-1993 he also served as conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra. McKinney’s fine 2003 arrangement captures the majestic character of the original and features parts for nine tenor trombones, three bass trombones, tuba, organ, and percussion. Mr. McKinney is currently the Minister of Music at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Cary, NC. He was the bass trombonist of the Utah Symphony from 1989-2011 and adjunct professor at Brigham Young University and the University of Utah. Performed by the Minneapolis Trombone Choir at the 46th annual Minneapolis Trombone Choir concert, at Judson Memorial Baptist Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on Sunday, March 17th, 2019.
