Total War: SHOGUN 2 1vs1: Imported Matchlock Ashigaru vs White Tiger Force | 2 Rounds Clan: Takeda vs Aizu Battle Difficulty: normal Round 1: White Tiger Force deployed in 3 ranks Round 2: White Tiger Force deployed in 2 ranks Imported Matchlock Ashigaru: 3 ranks & Fire by Rank ON Imported Matchlock Ashigaru are the first matchlock units available to most factions. In contrast to other matchlock units, who need to research the late-game Gunpowder Mastery bushido art or at the very least make a Powder Maker, Imported Matchlock Ashigaru require a Nanban Trade Port, which can be obtained without research as soon as a faction has access to a port and makes contact with the Nanban. The Otomo Clan can build Imported Matchlock Ashigaru immediately, as it has a Nanban Trade Port at the beginning of the campaign. Compared to regular Matchlock Ashigaru, Imported Matchlock Ashigaru have -25% men, are much more expensive to train and maintain, have slightly better accuracy and reloading skill, but have poorer morale. They do not benefit from the bonuses the Otomo Clan, Oda Clan, or the Ikko Ikki confer upon their Matchlock Ashigaru; however, the Otomo Clan can recruit them from the very beginning of the campaign, allowing them to have a significant presence throughout much of the early game. Imported Matchlock Ashigaru gain a 50% discount and are recruited twice as quickly if the clan training them converts to Christianity. As with regular Matchlock Ashigaru, Imported Matchlock Ashigaru fire bullets that ignore armor, making them ideal against heavily armored targets; their matchlocks also inflict a heavy morale penalty on their targets. However, their poor reloading skill make them vulnerable to being rushed by melee troops after they fire off a volley. In addition, as matchlock units, they must be carefully positioned with an unobstructed view of their targets to achieve maximum effectiveness. Their poor armor make them a poor choice for fighting bow-armed units. Finally, their melee stats are abysmal, and they cannot be expected to do well against dedicated melee troops in close combat. However, they are superb at manning walls during siege defenses, and they can inflict a good number of kills so long as they retreat to safety before being targeted by melee or missile attacks. Later in the game, Matchlock Samurai outclass Imported Matchlock Ashigaru in every category save cost. White Tiger Force are a unit type unique to the Aizu, substituting and replacing standard Levy Infantry. They are somewhat superior to levy infantry, with better accuracy and reload skill (the rest of the stats are identical). Their recruitment and upkeep costs are correspondingly higher, but still relatively cheap. White Tiger Forces are thus useful for garrisoning region capitals for a low cost. They are also useful in the early game, where better troops may be too expensive to field in large numbers. Despite their superior statistics when compared to standard militia, White Tiger Forces are no match against dedicated line infantry, which are superior in combat. Unlike levy infantry, White Tiger Forces remain more expensive to train than Spear Levy even after modernisation removes the early discount for traditional units. This makes spear levy more cost effective for maintaining public order than White Tiger Forces throughout the entire campaign for the Aizu. The description terms White Tiger Force as line infantry; however, the game classes them as militia and their statistics are more in-line with militia.
