Mission Control flagged two heat signatures on the hull, moving in a walking pattern, appearing nearly forty minutes after our EVA team was already back inside. The cameras showed nothing. But four independent sensor systems agreed on what was there. This is the account of the crew of the Aethon — eight people in deep space, watching something learn what we look like from the outside of the only thing keeping us alive. Based on real EVA physics, documented astronaut experiences, and NASA research into deep-space isolation. The knocking sound Yang Liwei heard on China's first crewed spaceflight in 2003 was never explained. Engineers found nothing. The sound came back on later missions.
