The Great Coral Crisis | Western Coral Bleaching | Latest Update | Drishti IAS English
Recently, Western Australia experienced its longest, largest, and most intense coral bleaching event on record, affecting 1,500 km of reef and causing coral death rates between 11% and over 90% in areas like Ningaloo, Rowley Shoals, and Ashmore Reef. This severe bleaching was driven by a prolonged marine heatwave, with temperatures far exceeding what corals can tolerate. Coral bleaching occurs when stressed corals expel the algae (zooxanthellae) they rely on for energy, turning white and weakening their survival chances. Key causes include rising sea temperatures, ocean acidification, pollution, sedimentation, and diseases, all worsened by climate change. Human activities such as overfishing and coastal development further increase stress on coral ecosystems. The consequences of bleaching are serious, leading to loss of marine biodiversity, declines in fisheries and tourism, damage to coastal protection, and disruption of marine food chains.
