The Quint: Flood Fury Ravages North and East India

Eight people who were stranded in Chandigarh’s Yamunanagar district due to flooding, were airlifted. The water levels reached a dangerous level, making it impossible to rescue them through boats. The flood situation gripping Assam has worsened as 2 more people have died and nearly 16 lakh people in 19 districts have been affected. Animals from Kaziranga have been fleeing to escape the rising water level, with 4 deer killed trying to cross highways to reach safer lands. Flash floods and heavy rains in Kashmir have led to houses collapsing and the death of 3 people. The Jammu-Srinagar highway remains closed in Ramban district due to landslides. A flood alert has also been sounded in Tawi river. Heavy rain in Shimla led to two women dying as a house collapsed, taking the death toll to 20.
