Macromolecules :You know that carbon compounds occur in very large in number and their molecular masses are large. The number of constituents atoms is large for the molecules with high molecular mass. The giant carbon molecule formed from hundreds of thousands of atoms are called Macromolecules. They are from the type of compounds called polymers. Macromolecules are divided on the basis of its source. They are classified as Natural Macromolecules and Manmade macromolecules. The Macromolecules which are obtained from natural sources like plants and animals are called natural macromolecules. For ex. Polysaccharides, protein, nucleic acids etc. The Macromolecules which are prepared in laboratory by chemical treatment on natural macromolecules or by using chemical compounds are called manmade macromolecules. For ex. elastomers, plastic, nylon etc. Manmade macromolecules is prepared by polymerisation reaction. Polymerisation reaction: The reaction in which monomer is converted into polymer are called polymerisation reaction and the obtained compounds are called polymer. Polymeric compounds are mainly classified into two types: 1. Homopolymer: The polymeric compounds are formed from only one or single monomer are called homopolymer. Ex. Polyethylene, Polystyrene, Polyvinyl Chloride 2. Copolymer : The polymeric compounds formed from two or more than two different monomers are called Copolymer. Ex. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) Use of some Polymers: Uses of Polyvinyl Chloride: It is used for making the doormat, tube, Hospital bag and kits, PVC pipe. Use of Polyethylene: It is used for making carry bag, sportwear
