READING 1: 1 John 4:11-18 RESP: Psalm 71(72):1-2,10-13 GOSPEL: Mark 6:45-52 Tuesday after epiphany (optional memorial of St André Bessette, Religious) Today, within the joyful season of Christmas and in the light of the Epiphany, the Church offers us the Optional Memorial of Saint Raymond of Penyafort, Priest. This celebration invites us to contemplate how the light of Christ continues to shine through the lives of holy men and women who allowed God’s love and truth to guide their service to the Church and the world. As we continue to reflect on the manifestation of Christ to all nations, the life of Saint Raymond reminds us that holiness is lived not only through miracles, but also through fidelity, wisdom, and tireless service. Saint Raymond of Penyafort was born around the year 1175 in Penyafort, near Barcelona, Spain. Gifted with a sharp intellect, he became one of the greatest canon lawyers in the history of the Church. He entered the Dominican Order later in life and combined deep prayer with rigorous scholarship. Saint Raymond was instrumental in compiling the Decretals of Pope Gregory IX, a foundational collection of Church law that guided ecclesial life for centuries. Beyond his academic brilliance, Saint Raymond was known for his pastoral heart. He served as confessor to Pope Gregory IX, worked zealously for the reform of clergy, and promoted the evangelization of Muslims and Jews through peaceful dialogue and sound teaching. Tradition also recounts his deep trust in God, seen in the famous story of his miraculous journey across the sea on his cloak, highlighting his obedience and faith. Celebrating Saint Raymond during the Christmas season reminds us that the Word made flesh continues to guide His Church through wisdom, love, and fidelity. Saint Raymond’s life teaches us that knowledge must serve charity, and authority must always be exercised in humility and obedience to God’s will. Through his example, we are encouraged to let the light of Christ shape our minds, guide our decisions, and deepen our commitment to truth and love, Amen. ************** Reflection: My dear friends in Christ, Today’s message is simple and powerful: God is with us, and His love drives away fear. In the Gospel, the disciples struggle against the storm, yet Jesus comes to them walking on the water and says, “Do not be afraid.” Their fear fades when they recognize His presence. This reminds us that faith does not mean a life without difficulties, but the assurance that Christ is with us in every storm. The first reading teaches us that love comes from God and that perfect love casts out fear. When we allow God’s love to dwell in our hearts, we gain the courage to trust Him, even when life is uncertain. Fear closes us in, but love opens us to hope and faith. Let us therefore fix our eyes on Christ, trust His presence, and live in love. When we do, our fears lose their power, and our lives become a testimony of God’s peace and faithfulness. Amen.
