Born in Virginia, he began his career as a surveyor and officer before rising to prominence during the French and Indian War. In 1775, Washington was chosen as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army, leading the American colonies through the Revolutionary War. Despite limited resources and numerous setbacks, his determination and strategic leadership secured key victories — especially at Trenton, Saratoga, and ultimately Yorktown, where British forces surrendered in 1781. After the war, Washington played a central role in the creation of the U.S. Constitution, becoming in 1789 the first President of the United States. He established many of the traditions and principles that still define the office today, promoting unity, neutrality, and civilian leadership. Washington voluntarily stepped down after two terms, setting a historic precedent for peaceful transfers of power. He retired to his Mount Vernon estate, where he died in 1799. Today, George Washington is remembered as a symbol of leadership, integrity, and the courage to guide a nation from revolution to stability — the man who turned the idea of America into a reality.
