Eagle talks about getting help from an American family. As an Iraqi interpreter he risked his life helping the U.S. troops during the war, but his journey to American citizenship posed a new challenges. Over there, the battle had been against insurgents and he had ridden with the Americans on patrols, interpreting not only words but his culture. Over here, in an America deeply divided over immigration, the foe was any barrier that could keep his dream beyond reach. The Virginian-Pilot is identifying the interpreter with his call sign, Eagle, because he fears for the safety of his family still in Iraq.
