The "I" in the song is trying to find a formula that would help him find a way to break up with the "you" (not because he actually wants to break up with her, but because he's scared of a break up that will eventually happen that he has no control over -- might as well break up with her himself). He never wants the coincidence that brings the two to meet to happen again, because it always goes together with separations (which he also doesn't want to happen again). He's found that "formula," and he showed it to her, and she laughed because it's kind of silly (him trying to end things when everything is still going well). He laughed, too, and decided to throw away the formula, because "there's no meaning in such a goodbye." "Farewell," "bye-bye," "see you tomorrow": He asks her if she knows which one of these he really means. He himself doesn't know, either (he can't make up his mind whether he wants to end things with her).
