Assetto Corsa - Goodwood Hillclimb Demonstration - McLaren Mercedes MP4-13

A Festival Of Speed-inspired Demonstration Run up the Goodwood Hillclimb in Assetto Corsa in the 1998 McLaren Mercedes MP4-13. The McLaren MP4-13 was McLaren's entry into the 1998 Formula One World Championship, and marked the first McLaren that Adrian Newey had a major design influence over. McLaren, instead of shortening their wheelbase to match the newly-mandated narrower track (1.8 metres, down from 2 metres in 1997), kept their car's wheelbase relatively unchanged from the previous year, granting them greater stability and more surface area for aerodynamic development. But that isn't the only advancement they developed. McLaren also used multiple trick braking systems; the first being a system that linked the brakes to the steering which, after Ferrari protested on the grounds of it being equivalent to a 4-wheel steering system, was ultimately banned. The second braking system served as a proto-KERS; harvesting energy from the brakes that is then used to power an electric motor. Unlike Modern KERS however, instead of that motor being directly connected to the drivetrain, it instead powered a set of auxiliary pumps that allowed the engine to produce approximately 35 extra horsepower. The MP4-13 was the car of the 1998 season; taking home 9 wins of the 16 races that year, with 5 of which being McLaren 1-2's. McLaren took home the Constructors' Championship with lead driver MIka Hakkinen taking home his first of two Drivers' Titles. The Goodwood Festival of Speed is an annual Automotive & Motorsport showcase event that first started in 1993, celebrating the past, promoting the present, and envisioning the future of the motoring world. The main event at the Goodwood Festival of Speed is its 1.89km (1.17mi) long Hillclimb, where runs are separated into two categories: Demonstrations and Shootouts. Demonstrations are non-timed runs from start to finish; cars in this category generally cruise up the hill to mainly serve as a showcase of the vehicle in motion with the sound of its engine, but some professional stunt-drivers can show off with drifts, burnouts, donuts, or other tricks as long as they don't cause damage to the grounds that would hamper the shootouts. Shootouts are timed runs that professional racing drivers take up the hillclimb to set the fastest time possible. Cars are divided into categories based on their era, discipline and general performance level. Aside from the overall winner of the event who sets the fastest time of the Festival, each category receives its own winner. The current overall record for the Goodwood International Hillclimb stands at 39.9 seconds, set by Romain Dumas in the Volkswagen I.D.R Hillclimb Special in 2019; The previous record was held by Nick Heidfeld in the McLaren MP4-13 Formula One car in 1999. However, since the start of the 2000 Festival of Speed, Formula One cars of the 1985 Model Year or newer have been forbidden to participate in the Shootout on safety grounds, though older cars can still compete. The MP4-13 mod was developed by the now-defunct group known as VIrtua Simulazioni. Because the modding team disbanded early in Assetto Corsa's life, the base version of the car is a very incomplete mod by modern standards. However, this mod has been updated by members of the Assetto Corsa community who wish to keep this car alive. Unfortunately, the most recent update by Race Department user Ponz has been de-listed from the site, taking with it his Ferrari F300 update as well. Thankfully there is an alternative update by Race Department user Ears, which, while not as refined as Ponz' update, still brings the car up to the latest tyre model. While Ears' physics update also includes updated sounds, there is a newer, cleaner sound-set for the McLaren MP4-13 by Race Department user ACFAN, which are the sounds used here. The Goodwood Hillclimb mod was created by RaceDepartment user Mantasisg, whom has also released the Lithuanian Nemunas-Ring, the Goodwood Road Circuit used for such events as Goodwood Revival, and the fictional Daukscheiring. He has also released car mods of the Jaguar XJ13 Group 6 and Mercedes-Benz W125 Grand Prix cars on assettocorsamods.net - both of which have received data updates from RaceDepartment user AphidGod.
