DALLAS BARTLEY Born in Chicago in 1916, bass-player Dallas Bartley led his own small group - "The Band That Comes On" - in his late 1920s in New York City, recording for Coral (1944), Cosmo (1946) and National (1947) labels, after having played in (and, it is whispered, engineered) Louis Jordan's Tympany Five between 1941 and 1943. His Soundies stem from 1945, and indeed, feature two of the songs he had already recorded. At this time his band included Walter Fuller (vocal / trumpet); Porter Kilbert (alto sax); Bob Mosley (piano) and Jack "The Bear" Parker (drums). Dallas Bartley died in 1979.
