I knew very little before this question, other than it is used in pasta sauces. That’s really about it. Well, I did find out that oregano is in the same plant family as mint and is primarily native to Southwester Eurasia and the Mediterranean region. I also found several articles stating that dried oregano looks a lot like marijuana. The leaves of the oregano plant are what is used to flavor various recipes. But unlike most herbs, oregano is best when dried according to most culinary articles I researched. It is mainly added to Italian dishes although some use it for other purposes. Oregano is loaded with antioxidants. The main 2 are thymol and rosmarinic acid. Their basic function are to prevent oxygen-based damage to cell structures throughout the body. Oregano also is a good source of fiber as well as vitamin K, manganese, and a good source of iron and calcium. In 2014 a study was published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry that claims oregano is capable of stopping an important enzyme linked to diabetes. Scientists have found that oregano does in fact contain compounds that are similar in their abilities to the ones found in medications. Now I don’t want you to throw away your metformin and start eating oregano, but the studies I have read are quite convincing that adding oregano to your diet can certainly help you maintain your diabetes. It is sold in supplements, capsules and oils. So, is oregano good for diabetes? Yes it is. Again, be careful if you decide to try it as a supplement. Consult your health care provider and be sure to monitor your blood sugar regularly. Some people have experienced very quick drops in the blood sugar when taking oregano supplements. So be careful.
