BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. -- Some of what is leftover from Monday's winter storm has melted, but secondary roads haven't seen much of the sun and still have slick spots. Snow plows haven't been able to get into several neighborhoods, so they are left unsalted and icy. Trooper Kelly Rhodes says State Highway Patrol has dealt with 54 stranded drivers, 150 accidents, and 311 calls in all in the western past of the state. "All of them were a speed issue where it was 25 or 30 miles per hour at that particular point was just too fast and just ended up in the ditch," Trooper Rhodes said. With it all refreezing overnight, the problems started slipping all over the place which sent troopers out sliding to help. "Myself was hung in a curb and couldn't go forward or backwards and just took a little bit of time for me to be able to get back down," Trooper Rhodes said. Walking on these roads that are more like ice rinks is hard enough, so imagine how hard it is to drive on them. "Most of the secondary roads, they just haven't had a chance to get to yet, so they're all still in pretty bad shape," Trooper Rhodes said. Drivers were left stranded or just gave up on their cars getting anywhere along side roads, like Town Mountain Road. Troopers say Monday's winter storm wasn't as bad as they expected or have seen in the past, but they know Old Man Winter isn't leaving anytime soon. "Once that temperature starts going down, all this stuff is going to refreeze right back and we're going to be right back where we started," Trooper Rhodes said. Black ice is the main threat going into Wednesday and Thursday because what has melted will refreeze and create more problems. Once again, troopers urge drivers not to go out on roads unless they must.
