In the southern Iraqi city of Basra, near the British Embassy, more than three-thousand demonstrators protested. During the protest, Shiites took part in processions for the Ashoura festival, which reaches its climax on Thursday. The celebration marks the 7th century death of revered Shiite saint, Imam Hussein. In the Iraqi city of Baqouba, northeast of Baghdad, about a thousand supporters of the Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr demonstrated. The protesters carried effigies of US President George W. Bush, UK Prime Minister Tony Blair and one representing Israel. Iraq has witnessed large demonstrations after the leading Iraqi Shiite cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, denounced the drawings, although he has also suggested that militant Muslims are partly to blame for distorting the image of Islam. Meanwhile, a rally in the southern Pakistani city of Karachi drew some 1,200 people condemning the cartoons. Protesters chanted "Death to Denmark" and "Death to America", while others burned the flags of Denmark, the United States and Israel on the pavement. One protester, Sheikh Shabbir Hussain, said they wanted a "complete investigation into why such an insult has been perpetrated". Pakistan's parliament unanimously passed a resolution on Friday condemning the cartoons. In Indian-controlled Kashmir, crowds continued to vent their anger against the publication of the cartoons.
