A direct sequel to Battlefield 1, the game is set during World War II, focusing on more of the lesser-known historical battles across Europe and the Pacific which, even though they've taken a back seat to more grandiose battles such as Normandy or Market Garden, are nonetheless historically significant in retelling the calamity and destruction of a world at war. The game is designed to be the most immersive experience in the series, with customization being vastly improved, allowing players to customize all clothing, weapons, and vehicles in multiplayer with the introduction of "The Company". Following the traumatic technological evolution that resulted from the "War to End All Wars", the world entered an era marked by significant social, political, and economic changes across the globe which was come to be dubbed the "Roaring Twenties". For the US, who greatly benefitted financially from the war, becomes the backbone of the world economy and experiences rapid economic growth and a cultural shift towards mass consumerism. On the other hand, Germany, who was blamed for the entire war and made to pay reparations, was humiliated and financially ruined, their money being worth less than the paper it was printed on. Meanwhile, a new epidemic, which had broken out during the latter days of WWI, had spread globally, and was nicknamed the "Spanish Flu", leading to 500 million infections. For the US, the economic boon and consumerism had created an unstable stock market bubble. When the bubble burst and the market crashed in October 1929, panic ensued, wiping out billions of dollars in wealth and shattering public confidence in the economy. This led to a sharp drop in consumer spending and investments and caused mass bank runs that wiped out many people's life savings, turning America's global economic backbone from prosperity to catastrophe, creating the Great Depression. This Great Depression was most severely felt in Germany, where it became the death blow for the once proud people, leaving them in a state of poverty, homelessness, and fearful desperation. Siezing the opportunity, a WWI veteran-turned-politician by the name of Adolf Hitler steps onto the scene, offering simple, radical explanations for Germany's suffering, blaming the Treaty of Versailles, the democratic government, communists, and Jews; promising a strong, unified Germany and an end to unemployment, which desperate citizens were eager to believe. Rising to popularity, Hitler's National Socialist (Nazi) Party seizes absolute power, forms the Third Reich, stops war reparations, allies with Italy and Japan, and revives German military industry. England and France, not wishing to start another war, only weakly protests against Nazi Germany, and even agrees to allow the Germans to invade and take over Czechoslovakia. It is not until Germany makes a surprise invasion of Poland in 1939 that England and France take up arms and officially declares war. Meanwhile Japan, being driven by an imperialist desire to dominate East Asia, had been waging a war of conquest against China and surrounding territories. In response, the US places an oil embargo on Japan, threatening to stall their whole military operation. With the US controlled Philippines laying directly in the path of their supply lines, Japan concludes they must immobilize America's ability to wage war and decide to launch a surprise attack on the US's powerful fleet stationed at Pearl Harbor in 1941. Battlefield V received "generally favorable" to "mixed" reviews, selling fewer than half the physical units than Battlefield 1 did upon its launch during the same period of time. The greatest criticism was aimed at both the lack of key battles that marked WWII as well as the "creative liberties" DICE took over authenticity, such as allowing certain styles and aesthetics to be used that were not common of that era.
