And in the pool? Anyone with vision problems, whatever they may be, has asked themselves this at some point. After all, everyone wants to enjoy the scenery... And the answer is: yes, you can! As long as you take some specific care to avoid putting your eye health at risk. The truth is that contact lenses are much more practical in these environments, since glasses can fall, break or get scratched. However, make no mistake - contact lenses also require certain care, since these places are susceptible to the presence of a protozoan called acanthamoeba, capable of causing eye infections and even loss of vision. Not to mention that water, sand, and even the sun can contribute to allergies and other types of contamination. The American Optometric Association (AOA) and the U.S. FDA recommend that you avoid going into water while wearing contact lenses. This includes lakes, the ocean, swimming pools, hot tubs, and even showers. Why? Water can contain many invisible threats to your eyes. Your contact lenses can trap some of these microorganisms, causing harmful effects. One such threat is Acanthamoeba keratitis. Acanthamoeba species are ubiquitous microscopic organisms found in soil and lake water. “Keratitis” refers to inflammation of the cornea.
