The first installment in the franchise was released on March 9, 1999, for the Nintendo 64. The goal of the game is to collect the most stars, which can be earned with coins from blue tiles or won in mini-games, and become a superstar. The dice shows the numbers 1 to 10, and various items influence the game, as do the event tiles. If you pass the Koopa Bank, you have to deposit money; if you land directly at the bank, you get all the money you've collected paid out. The sequel, "Mario Party 2," was released on October 12, 2000, greatly optimized the gameplay and added new modes. The third entry, released on September 3, 2001, featured a quirky story mode and a variety of items for the first time. "Mario Party 3" also introduced Daisy and Waluigi to a wider audience as playable characters. "Mario Party 4" was released for the GameCube on November 29, 2002, replacing the Koopa Bank with a lottery and introducing a story mode heavily influenced by Party Mode. "Mario Party 5," released on December 5, 2003, marked the first major changes since Mario Party 2. The item system was completely overhauled and capsules were introduced, which could be used on their own or transfer their respective effects to an adjacent field. "Mario Party 6," which came to Europe on March 18, 2005, adopted the capsule system, improved it, and also introduced a day/night system. Various events and minigames differ during the day and at night. As an additional gimmick, a microphone was released for the Nintendo GameCube, which was included with the game. Some selected minigames could thus be played with voice control. Mario Party 7, the last Mario Party game released for the GameCube, released on February 10, 2006, also features the microphone and the capsule system. New features include character-specific ultimate capsules and an 8-player mode. On May 29, 2007, "Mario Party 8," the first spin-off for the Nintendo Wii console with motion controls, was released. Aside from motion control and the ability to use Mii characters, this installment didn't offer any major innovations, but unfortunately did include some downgrades. The resolution is the lowest of all Wii games, a handful of candy items seemed like a handful compared to the capsules, and the selection of game modes is limited. After Hudson was acquired by Konami, the studio "NDCube" took over the series and released "Mario Party 9" for Wii on March 2, 2012. The revised gameplay, in which all players had to sit in a car, collect mini-games, and defeat bosses, was a disappointment to most fans. "Mario Party 10," released on March 20, 2015, for Wii U, retained the unpopular gameplay but offered an innovative new mode with "Bowser Party" and a minimal approximation of the old system with "amiibo Party." With "Super Mario Party," released on October 5, 2018, NDCube returns to the roots of Mario Party, implementing only the best past and present ideas. For the first time, some minigames are even playable online. Furthermore, a few installments have also been released for handhelds.
