In addition, US-China strategic competition in Asia-Pacific will also be covered. Post-World War II Occupation and demilitarization of Japan from 1945 to 1952. The Japanese constitution, drafted by U.S. occupation officials and adopted by the Japanese legislature in 1947, renounced the use of war in Article 9, stating that “land, sea, and air forces, as well as another war potential, will never be maintained.” After the Korean War in 1950, the U.S. pressed for the establishment of a Japanese national paramilitary force, which in 1954 became the Self-Defense Forces- (SDF). Japan regained its sovereignty in 1952 after the signing of the San Francisco Peace Treaty, which officially ended the conflict and allocated compensation to Allied victims of Japanese war crimes. Japan was used as a Bulwark against the Soviet Union in the pacific region. A Mutual Security Assistance Pact signed in 1952 was replaced by the 1960 Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security, in which Japan grants the United States military basing rights on its territory for Extended Nuclear Deterrence. This pledge is not mutual: Japan is not obligated to defend the United States. Japanese Govts during early years of Cold War followed this doctrine…………… To get military aid, weapon and equipment necessary for Japan’s self-defense, To expand the SDF and To contribute more money to host-nation support (HNS) for U.S. forces. #unitedstates #japan #asiapacific
